Faceting Software

The function of the Faceting software is to identify contingent regions of a watertight 3D mesh as fracture or surface areas. In GRAVITATE, Faceting is part of the geometric ingestion pipeline, and is a first step in preparing a scanned 3D mesh for separate processing of different types of mesh regions. It performs faceting dependent upon a small number of tunable parameters and provides limited interactive final cleanup capability. The algorithm works on 50k meshes, and so within GRAVITATE it is used in conjunction with components from IMATI to upscale the resolution and annotation after the faceting step and with the GraviFix component to ensure a watertight mesh for processing.

The Faceting software is at TRL-4 and has been used to perform the faceting of the complete GRAVITATE collection of Salamis fragments (over 300 fragments). It is semi-automatic, and a faceting always needs to be vetted by an expert.
