GRAVITATE Desktop Client and 3D part-based annotation

GRAVITATE Desktop Client and 3D part-based annotation

The GRAVITATE desktop client is a multi-purpose interface specifically tailored for high-res 3D models, and provides the graphical user interface to control the ReAssembly,ReAssociation and ReUnification components, and to communicate with the GRAVITATE back-end functions. Due to their close relationship, the 3D part-based annotation functionality is integrated into the desktop client. This functionality enables the selection of a free-form area on the 3D models and their association with a term of the CHAP (Cultural Heritage Artefact Partonomy) and subsequent inclusion in the GRAVITATE triple-store.

The desktop interface is a necessary adjunct to the web interface, allowing the visualization and manipulation of large 3D models with several million vertices, which is not currently possible in the web interface due to technology limitations. The web and desktop interfaces are synchronized through a common “clipboard” component, which is a container for organized sets of cultural heritage artefacts.

Beyond GRAVITATE, the desktop interfaced can be used in any context where the visualization, analysis and processing of large 3D data is required. It is particularly applicable to the CH field since the current functionalities are the result of user requirement and trials phases of GRAVITATE, but the processes are general enough to be applied to other, very general, contexts, wherever the analysis and measurement of 3D digital data is needed. The part-based annotation is a general tool, which can be applied in any context where it is important to localise an area of interest of a 3D digital model and annotate it within a controlled vocabulary in accordance with W3C standards. It has already been applied to medicine and computer aided design beyond the GRAVITATE project.

The GRAVITATE Centre of Competence  will be an important route for managing the relationship between components, supporting their sustainability and development and managing overall exploitation
